PVMI 2025 UNDER THE INTERNATIONAL GREEN ENERGY EXPO AND CONFERENCE
Dr. Jinseok Sung, a Research Fellow, spoke on Singapore’s electricity and solar market and electricity import projects at PVMI 2025, held as part of the International Green Expo and Conference, co-hosted by the city of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province in South Korea.

THE 1ST TECHNICAL WORKSHOP UNDER THE EU-ASEAN ENERGY DIALOGUE
Dr. Jinseok Sung, Research Fellow, discussed the development of a regionally integrated electricity market at the 1st Technical Workshop under the EU-ASEAN Energy Dialogue, co-hosted by the European Union and the Ministry of Energy of the Kingdom of Thailand.
Inaugural Cross-Border Electricity Trade (CBET) Workshop hosted by ESI
The Energy Studies Institute (ESI) is pleased to announce the successful organization of the inaugural Cross-Border Electricity Trade (CBET) Workshop, held in Singapore on January 16-17, 2025. This workshop convened over 200 stakeholders across Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia to further the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative, which is crucial for enhancing energy security, efficiency, and sustainability through cross-border electricity trading.
ESI Staff Named Highly Cited Researchers 2024
Two ESI Staff, Professor Ang Beng Wah and Dr Su Bin, are named in the 2024 Highly Cited Researchers Report published by Clarivate Analytics. ESI Hosts Wuhan University Delegation for Workshop on Green Development of Asian Countries
On November 13, 2024, the Energy Studies Institute (ESI) had the honor of hosting a distinguished delegation from Wuhan University. The delegation included Dr. Ling Xiong, Associate Professor of International Law and Assistant Dean of the Institute of International Studies; Dr. Xiujie Tan, Associate Professor of International Law and Deputy Director of the Center for Climate Change and Energy Economics; Dr. Yishuang Liu, Postdoctoral Researcher and Executive Committee Member of the Climate Change Economics Forum; and Shuo Yan, PhD Candidate in World Economics. They engaged in discussions with Dr. Bin Su, Senior Research Fellow and Division Head at ESI, Dr. Sheng Zhong, Senior Research Fellow and Program Lead, along with other researchers.
The joint workshop, co-chaired by Dr. Bin Su and Dr. Ling Xiong, focused on the theme “Green Development of Asian Countries”.
ESI@NUS and ACE Leads Discussion on Decarbonising Southeast Asia at SIEW 2024
In a global context focused on achieving net-zero target, ASEAN plays a crucial role in transitioning towards a decarbonised energy sector. The region’s reliance on fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, has created significant regional and global environmental issues. Rapid economic growth in ASEAN, along with high energy demand, necessitates strategic planning of the renewable energy mix, grid modernisation, investment and collaboration of financing from public and private sectors, and socio-economic benefits from domestic and regional perspectives. To address this challenge, the Energy Studies Institute at the National University of Singapore (ESI@NUS) and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), recently co-hosted a roundtable, "Decarbonising Asia: Energy Transformation”, during Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2024.
Visit by Fudan University and Joint Workshop
On October 8, 2024, ESI had the pleasure of hosting a distinguished delegation from Fudan University. The delegation included Prof. WU Libo, Full Professor at the School of Economics and the School of Data Science, Vice Dean of the Big Data Research Institute, Fudan University, President of Shanghai Academy of AI for Science, and Dean of Shanghai Institute for Energy and Carbon Neutral Strategy; Associate Prof. Zhou Yang from the Institute for Big Data, Associate Prof. TANG Weiqi from the Fudan Development Institute and the Shanghai Institute of Energy and Carbon Neutrality Strategy, and Dr SHI Zhenyu, from Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Incubation Institute, Fudan University. They met with Prof. LEE Poh Seng, Executive Director of ESI, Dr. SU Bin, Senior Research Fellow and Division Head, and other ESI researchers. They organized a joint workshop on “Intelligent Strategies for Energy Transition and Climate Action”, chaired by Dr SU Bin and Prof WU Libo.

Carbon pricing has been spotlighted as a key policy instrument to achieve climate mitigation targets among countries around the world. Due to its cost-effectiveness and flexibility in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, a growing number of national and local governments have introduced carbon pricing schemes since the Nordic countries adopted carbon taxes in the early 1990s. The concept of carbon pricing was not limited to government-level legislation but also applied at the company level, which is called internal carbon pricing. For the last three years, the Energy Studies Institute (ESI)’s research project, “Carbon Pricing Strategies of Other Key Economies,” examined the international experience of these government-led and business-led carbon pricing schemes, including the motivation of the scheme adoption, scheme design, and the impacts of the schemes. To share our key findings, ESI cordially invites you to the project closing workshop. This workshop will provide helpful insights about how to make Singapore’s carbon tax achieve both climate and economic goals by presenting several comparative case studies and empirical analysis results.
