Abstract:
North America is experiencing significant growth in electricity demand, with some forecasting the growth to be five-fold increase relative to recent past two years. Much of the growth comes from electrification and the buildout of data centres. To meet such demand, the U.S. must streamline approaches to connect new energy resources to the grid, while keeping the system reliable and affordable. Several challenges face the US power industry at this juncture, including how to match the pace of energy resource and system expansion development to the needs of fast-growing data centres; how to ensure that open access to the transmission system and competitive wholesale power markets continue to provide value to customers; and how to protect those customers from the risks and costs of over-building and future stranded assets. Commissioner Judy Chang from the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will speak about potential strategies and approaches in addressing these challenges currently facing the North American energy industry.
