Dr Roger Fouquet is Senior Research Fellow at the Energy Studies Institute (ESI), National University of Singapore (NUS). He investigates the changing relationships between economic development, energy demand and its environmental impacts, with an emphasis on providing a long run perspective on energy and climate change issues. This perspective has offered insights about the role of technological innovation in directing the demand for energy services (e.g., heat, cooling, power, transport and lighting), the nature and impact of energy price shocks, the drivers and speed of energy transitions, and ultimately the factors influencing the long run trends in energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

Prior to joining the Energy Studies Institute in August 2022, Roger was Associate Professorial Research Fellow at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Before, he was Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) in Bilbao (Spain), Senior Lecturer at the University of South Pacific in Fiji, and Research Fellow at Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London.

He has published close to forty articles in international academic journals. In 2006, his joint article was chosen for the Campbell Watkins Award for Best Paper in The Energy Journal. In 2010, his book, 'Heat, Power and Light', was selected by Choice Magazine as one of three Outstanding Academic Titles in Business and Economics. He is the editor of the Handbook on Energy and Climate Change, of the Handbook on Green Growth, and of the volume on The Economics of Renewable Energy. He is also an associate editor of the Journal of Energy History.

- Energy Economics (focusing on long run energy service demand, the influence of economic and technological development, energy prices and energy transitions)

- Environmental economics (particularly related to the process of externalisation and internalisation of environmental costs, including carbon pricing and other environmental policies)

- Economic History (understanding the drivers of past technological adoption and assessing the improvements in welfare from economic and technological development)
