Ms Melissa Low, ESI Research Fellow, participated in the 8th UN ECOSOC Youth Forum co-organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth in New York City, United States of America from 8-9 April 2019. Together with Mr Darren Tan, Head of Education and Community Outreach at ComCrop, Melissa was nominated by the National Youth Council Singapore to represent Singapore’s non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

This year’s UN ECOSOC Youth Forum theme was “Youth: Empowered, Included and Equal”. The event provided a platform for young leaders from around the world to engage in a dialogue among themselves and with UN Member States and to share ideas for advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, and the Paris Climate Agreement. The Forum serves as a unique space for young people to share their vision and elaborate their substantive contributions to United Nations upcoming meetings, including the 2019 ECOSOC Substantive Session, the 2019 high-level political forum on sustainable development (HLPF) and the high-level events taking place on the margins of the opening of the opening of the General Assembly, including the Climate Summit, the High-level Meeting on Financing for Development and the SDG Summit.

The Singapore delegation was led by Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), Ms Sim Ann. Officials from MCCY and the National Youth Council Singapore were also in attendance. Together with the delegation, Melissa participated in a number of plenary sessions, a thematic session on SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, and had an exchange with Singaporean youth based in New York City and Commissioner Bill Chong from the New York Mayor’s Office Department of Youth and Community Development.
