Dr Philip Andrews-Speed, ESI Senior Research Fellow, was invited to participate in the annual World Economic Forum on ASEAN that was held in Hanoi from 11th to 13th September 2018. He moderated a closed-door, invitation-only session entitled “Fostering an Effective Energy Transition in ASEAN”, attended by 25 senior individuals from government, state-owned enterprises, multinational corporations and international organisations. Following that, he was a discussion leader in an open session on “New Energy Frontiers for ASEAN” that had about 50 participants. The key messages from both sessions were that ASEAN member states should act now to constrain the development of new fossil fuel capacity and instead promote cleaner forms of energy, and that international capital is available to support such a strategy.
