Seminar on Electricity Market Liberalisation for Small Businesses

On 8th May 2018, Mr Allan Loi, Research Associate at ESI, presented on “Open Electricity Market: How Competitive Can it Get?” This event was organised by the Singapore Exchange Limited (SGX), as part of a series of events organised to educate the public and electricity market stakeholders about the upcoming developments related to the Open Electricity Market.

In his presentation, Mr Loi spoke about the liberalisation experiences of other jurisdictions such as Texas, New Zealand and Japan, and how the retail market can evolve for Singapore.

The event was chaired by Henning Gloystein, an energy editor from Reuters. Mr Tan Ching Liang from the Energy Market Company of Singapore also spoke about ‘Latest Developments in the National Electricity Market of Singapore’ and Dr. Thomas Reindl, the Deputy CEO of the Solar Research Institute of Singapore, presented on the ‘Solar Potential in Singapore’’. Representatives from Union Energy, Charis Electric, Best Electricity and Sembcorp Power also gave insights on their retail price plans offered to the public in the Jurong region.

This event was attended by over 100 representatives from small businesses and electricity retailers in Singapore.
