World Bank Workshop on Asia Gas

On 19 March 2018, Dr Philip Andrews-Speed, Senior Principal fellow at ESI, gave an invited keynote address at the World Bank's Asia Gas Workshop, held at the World Bank’s Singapore office. His topic was “The Governance of Energy in Asian Countries: Balancing energy access, poverty, air pollution and lower carbon intensity”. Choosing natural gas as his entry point, Philip drew attention to three sets of factors that shape a nation’s energy mix: geology and geography, the national energy policy paradigm and state capacity, and wealth. Many countries in South and Southeast Asia suffer from disadvantages in these respects and so have faced challenges boosting the share of natural gas in their energy mix.
