“ASEAN’s Energy Dilemmas” by Dr. Elspeth Thomson, Senior Fellow, Energy Studies Institute, NUS

Dr. Thomson, Canadian, moved to Singapore in 2000. Besides her book tracing the history of China’s coal industry, she has published numerous articles and book chapters on various types of energy consumed and traded in Southeast, North and South Asia. Through the 1990s she taught at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and Lingnan University in Hong Kong. From 2001-07, she was a China energy specialist at the East Asian Institute at NUS. She joined the Energy Studies Institute in 2008.

Dr. Thomson will present “ASEAN’s Energy Dilemmas” and provide an overview of recent and projected energy supply and demand for the region. There are presently about 160 million people in the ASEAN region with no electricity. Apart from Singapore and Brunei, the average per capita consumption of electricity in the region is far below that of the OECD. The ASEAN is now generating approximately 46% of its electricity from gas, 27% from coal, 12% from hydro, 11% from oil, 3% from geothermal and 1% from biomass and waste. Several nuclear power plants are planned. Elspeth will examine the current debate over gas/coal/nuclear electricity generation in the region, and will also review the International Energy Agency’s projections for the use of renewable forms of energy in its “Current“, “New Policies” and “450” Scenarios.

“The Changing Economics of Energy” by Dr. John Wiebe, President and CEO, GLOBE Foundation

Dr. Wiebe is currently President and CEO of the GLOBE Foundation, GLOBE Events, GLOBE Communications, GLOBE Advisors, GLOBE Ventures and Sustainable Media Group. Until May 2005 he was the President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and until April 2007 he was Chairman of the Board of the Canadian Education Centres Network and Global Schools Inc. with operations throughout the Asia Pacific region and Latin America. He was recently recognized as one of Canada’s 2012 Clean 16, the top 16 individuals in Canada who have done the most to advance the cause of sustainability and clean capitalism.

Dr. Wiebe will present the “Changing Economics of Energy” and explain what this means for the development and deployment of cleantech. He will give an overview of the profound transformation of the global energy market, and highlight the forces that are driving this change. He will make the link with climate change, the most pressing global concern driving these changes, and he will touch on the new technologies that are bringing renewable and alternate energy resources online to meet the growing demand from developed, developing, and emerging economies. Finally, Dr. Wiebe will expand on the concept of the Green Economy and the role of renewable energy therein.
