About the Workshop
As the world changes ever more rapidly, being able to navigate the way into the future becomes increasingly significant. What are the trends and forces that will shape the world economy in the years ahead? Shell has been using scenario planning to help it chart its business strategies for several decades. Its highly-regarded Scenario Planning team, based at its global headquarters in the Hague, Netherlands, devises and updates its scenarios every few years, taking inputs from policymakers, political watchers, economists, sociologists and others with an eye on how the future might shape up.
Scenarios are not forecasts of the future; nor do they make detailed predictions on how events might play out. Instead, they help decision-making by drawing up plausible alternative storylines of the future in which business, community and political leaders might have to operate. Dr Cho Khong, Shell’s Chief Political Analyst, has had a leading role in shaping Shell’s scenarios for over a decade and will share his insights about the processes, and implications.
About the Speaker
Dr Cho-Oon Khong is Chief Political Analyst in the Global Business Environment team, Shell International, with 15 years of experience in leading and participating in country scenario projects. Cho advises on political trends, is responsible for political risk analysis for the Shell Group, and leads the external environment assessments for the Group’s country reviews. He was actively involved in developing the 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2005 sets of Shell Global Scenarios and the 2008 Shell Energy Scenarios.
Cho is also an active scenarios practitioner, focusing on using scenarios in futures thinking, and advising on scenario development for risk analysis for the Shell Group. He has worked on a range of scenario projects with international organisations, governments, universities, research institutions and business companies in Asia, Europe, the US and Africa. He is a member of the advisory panel of the Evian Group based at IMD, Lausanne.
Cho tracks politics and international relations and is particularly interested in issues of political development in Asia and the Middle East. He previously taught Politics and International Relations at the University of Bath and the National University of Singapore, researching political development in East Asia. He was also Senior Economist at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London and Laski Scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge. He graduated from the University of Singapore, and received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the London School of Economics.
