INAUGURAL ESI / ISEAS AMBASSADORIAL SERIES
“France's Sustainable Development Policy”
by H.E. Olivier Caron (Ambassador of France to Singapore)
24 May 2010, 2:00pm-5:00pm (Day 1)
This is the first in the planned Ambassadorial series. Designed as a platform for foreign dignitaries to expound upon their countries’ positions with respect to various energy and environmental issues, this series aims to provide the public with international perspectives.
France has always been concerned with sustainable development. This is borne out by the fact that France has the lowest CO2 emissions among the major industrialised countries. Critical initiatives and political decisions are continually undertaken by the French government to keep France firmly on the path of sustainable development. The 2005 Energy Initiative and the Sustainable Development Round Table (Grenelle de l’Environnement) are but some of these initiatives. France’s nuclear energy policy is spectacular in its contribution to the achievement of sustainable development goals.
The Ambassador of France to Singapore, H.E. Olivier Caron will deliver a speech, “France’s Sustainable Development Policy”. It will be followed by a Q & A session and refreshments.
France-ASEAN Conference on Clean Energies
25th May 2010, 8:00am-6:00pm (Day 2)
ASEAN has a growing interest in the development of nuclear power for energy security reasons and for combating climate change.
France is currently building up a strong and diversified portfolio in renewable and carbon-free technologies. It is a world leader in the use and development of clean energies and relies more heavily on nuclear power than any other country in the world. Benefitting from tight collaboration between the public and private sectors, the French nuclear industry boasts safe, efficient and cutting edge technologies that are among the best in the domain.
Learn from the French clean energy experience!
This one-day event will bring together specialists in technology deployment, industrial development and academia from EDF, AREVA, Renault-Nissan and CEA, and from the ASEAN countries of Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.
EDF Group is active in all major electricity businesses from generation to distribution. With a worldwide workforce of 160,900 people, it operates a diverse portfolio of 120,000 mega-watts of generation capacity (nuclear, hydro, thermal and renewables) in Europe and worldwide. EDF has the world’s premier nuclear generation fleet. It offers competitive solutions that reconcile sustainable economic development and climate preservation.
AREVA provides solutions for carbon-free power generation and electricity transmission. With its knowledge and expertise in these fields, the group has a leading role to play in meeting the world’s energy needs. Ranked first in the global nuclear power industry, AREVA offers every stage of the fuel cycle, reactor design and construction, and related services. AREVA is also a world leader in electricity transmission and distribution and offers a complete range of solutions for greater grid stability and energy efficiency. The group is also developing a portfolio of operations in renewable energies. Sustainable development is a core component of its industrial strategy.
Renault-Nissan Alliance celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2009, a year in which it sold more than six million vehicles. With its broad portfolio of zero emission vehicles, it has positioned itself as a world leader in the development of electric vehicles. More than 50 agreements have been signed worldwide, with the aim of introducing electric vehicles in 2010 and commencing large-scale distribution in 2012.
CEA is the French Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique). A public body established in October 1945 by General de Gaulle, it is a leader in research, development and innovation. CEA is active in energy, information and health technologies, as well as defence and national security. In each of these fields, the CEA maintains a cross-disciplinary culture of engineers and researchers, building on the synergies between fundamental and technological research.
