Abstract

After a few decades of global inactivity in the field of nuclear energy, there is a growing interest in this energy for various reasons, particularly, the necessity of decreasing carbon dioxide emissions contributing to global warming. Within this context, Professor Vladimir Artisyuk will elaborate on the Russian experience with nuclear energy, including the specifics of certain Russian nuclear reactors (i.e., VVER-1000, AES-2006, etc), while sharing his Insights on the Russian university education and its system of continuing education & training in the operations of nuclear power plants. Professor Artisyuk will give a survey of Russian universities that are responsible for the education of specialists and experts for various areas of nuclear power development such as reactor physics, thermo hydraulics, civil engineering and electrical engineering.

Following that, he will identify the challenges and opportunities for Russian cooperation with the countries embarking on programs for generating nuclear power, particularly, in developing their infrastructure and manpower. Drawing on his first-hand experience as a Russian nuclear scientist, he will focus on the scientific basics of non-proliferation of nuclear materials stressing the proliferation resistance aspects of current power reactors (both Russian and Western ones). Furthermore, he will elaborate on the conditions for exporting Russian reactors, which may further prevent proliferation of nuclear materials.
