Abstract

In an effort to establish a representative and reliable picture of energy consumption in the various sectors of the Canadian economy, the federal government established a number of database centres to review, evaluate, critique and develop indictors from the data collected by the government's data collection agency, Statistics Canada. CIEEDAC, the centre established to review data on industrial energy consumption, has over the last 18 years worked to improve the energy data set related to manufacturing and to energy supply.  Data reliability, consistency, representativeness and usefulness have increased.  The session will address issues faced, solutions found and problems that still exist in an effort to measure energy consumption and its implications for policy and progress in the Canadian system.

About the speaker

Dr. John Nyboer  is one of the founding members of MKJA and has extensive experience with energy modelling, policy analysis and issues relating to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. John’s consulting work has included a diverse range of projects for all levels of government, utilities, industry, and non-governmental organizations that promote effective climate change policy through the assessment of proposed regulatory instruments, evaluation of technologies and the development of energy intensity and efficiency indicators. He has played an integral role in the development of the CIMS integrated energy-economy model and other energy  end-use models currently in use in Canada.

Dr. Nyboer is a University Research Associate and Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University’s School of Resource and Environmental Management. In this capacity, he acts as the executive director of the Energy and Materials Research Group (EMRG) and the Canadian Industrial Energy End-use Data and Analysis Centre (CIEEDAC). He frequently presents the outcomes of work done by the centre nationally and internationally and currently serves on the National Advisory Council on Energy Efficiency, an advisory committee designed to help the Office of Energy Efficiency of Natural Resources Canada develop and review policies. John is the author of numerous articles and reports on climate policy, and was a co-author of  The Cost of Climate Policy, which was recognized with the Best Policy Book in Canada award of the National Policy Research Initiative, and short-listed for the Donner award for best policy book in Canada.

Dr. Nyboer holds a Ph.D. of Resource and Environmental Management and a Master of Resource Management from Simon Fraser University, a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Alberta, and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto.
