About the Roundtable
The Industrial Energy Efficiency Roundtable will discuss the challenges and opportunities of promoting energy efficiency in industries. Despite the often touted benefits, harnessing the “fifth fuel”, the name given to energy efficiency, has not been easy. Experts from Canada, the Netherlands and Singapore will share their insights on this multi-faceted subject based on their research and consulting experiences. Is industrial energy consumption really declining or growing at a slower rate given the development of energy efficient technologies? Has the energy intensity of manufactured products been decreasing? What are the factors we have to include when dealing with industrial energy efficiency? Should a holistic perspective be adopted? These are some of the questions which the experts will shed light on in their presentations. Following that, participants are invited to an question and answer session.

About the Speakers
Professor Kornelis Blok is the Managing Director of Ecofys and member of the Supervisory Board of Econcern, the mother company of Ecofys. Within Ecofys, he has special responsibilities for work in the area of Energy Strategy. This international consultancy group plays a key role in developing energy and climate policy in Europe, e.g. in the development of the European emission trading system. He is a lead author for the Third and Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
He is also a professor of Science, Technology and Society at Utrecht University and supervises Utrecht University's master programme Energy Science and the track Energy and Resources within the master programme Sustainable Development. He recently published a text book: Introduction to Energy Analysis. Professor Blok has extensive research and consultancy experience in the field of energy efficiency improvement and clean energy production, including renewable energy.
Professor Blok studied experimental physics at Utrecht University and received a Ph.D. degree in 1991 on a thesis "On the Reduction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions."
Dr. John Nyboer is one of the founding members of MKJA and has extensive experience with energy modelling, policy analysis and issues relating to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. John’s consulting work has included a diverse range of projects for all levels of government, utilities, industry, and non-governmental organizations that promote effective climate change policy through the assessment of proposed regulatory instruments, evaluation of technologies and the development of energy intensity and efficiency indicators. He has played an integral role in the development of the CIMS integrated energy-economy model and other energy end-use models currently in use in Canada.
Dr. Nyboer is a University Research Associate and Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University’s School of Resource and Environmental Management. In this capacity, he acts as the executive director of the Energy and Materials Research Group (EMRG) and the Canadian Industrial Energy End-use Data and Analysis Centre (CIEEDAC). He frequently presents the outcomes of work done by the centre nationally and internationally and currently serves on the National Advisory Council on Energy Efficiency, an advisory committee designed to help the Office of Energy Efficiency of Natural Resources Canada develop and review policies. John is the author of numerous articles and reports on climate policy, and was a co-author of The Cost of Climate Policy, which was recognized with the Best Policy Book in Canada award of the National Policy Research Initiative, and short-listed for the Donner award for best policy book in Canada.
Dr. Nyboer holds a Ph.D. of Resource and Environmental Management and a Master of Resource Management from Simon Fraser University, a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Alberta, and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto.
Dr. Chai Kah-Hin is Assistant Professor at the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department, National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his PhD degree from Cambridge University (supervised by Prof. Mike Gregory) in the area of international manufacturing. He has a Master Degree in Manufacturing Management from University of South Australia, and a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from University of Technology Malaysia.
His work experience includes management consulting and semiconductor manufacturing in Singapore and Malaysia. His work appears in journals such as Journal of Product Innovation Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Service Research, European Journal of Operational Research and International Journal of Service Industry Management. Dr. Chai is an editorial board member for several international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and Journal of Service Management. His current research interests include industrial energy efficiency and new product/service development.
