EU and Asian Policy Responses to Climate Change and Energy Security Post-Copenhagen

  • Dates: 26 – 27 Jul, 2010
  • Location: Seminar Room II, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS)

Date:     26 & 27 July 2010
Venue:  Seminar Room II
Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS)
               30 Heng Mui Keng Terrace
               Singapore 119614

Climate change and energy security have emerged as key issues within industry, research and policy circles. This conference will  provide a platform to facilitate  the  cross-industry and multi-disciplinary exchange of perspectives  on EU and Asian climate change policy responses. It will feature  representatives from  government,  academe and  the private sector in Singapore, the European Union and Asia. They will focus on  the  important energy and climate-related  themes and challenges  that confront policy-makers  following COP15 held in  Copenhagen in December 2009. In light of the fact that a binding global climate agreement was not established at this gathering, the various adaptation measures and mechanisms, mitigation efforts and commitments, risks and opportunities pertaining to climate change and energy security that are currently practised within the region will be discussed, as well as  the options  that are  being formulated for  presentation at  COP 16 which will be held in Mexico at the end of this year.

Mr Tan Yong Soon, Permanent Secretary (National Climate Change) and Ambassador Holger Standertskjold, Head of the EU Delegation will open the conference with keynote speeches. Presentations will be subsequently given by  specialists in technology deployment, industry and academe from the Asian Development Bank, Energy Studies Institute, General Electric, CETDEM, De La Salle University, Thailand Tapioca Development Institute and Neste Oil. They are from the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Germany.

The second day will bring together similar specialists from the National University of Singapore, Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Enerion Consulting, Korea Power Engineering Company, Cambridge University and  the  Energy Studies Institute. They are from Korea, the United Kingdom and Singapore.
