The Energy Studies Institute (ESI) is a research institute in the National University of Singapore seeking to advance the understanding of energy policy issues by conducting independent research and analysis. We have vacancy for researcher with post-graduate degrees (PhD preferred) in the fields of engineering, economics, or equivalent. He/she will join a multi-disciplinary team carrying out a two year research project entitled: "Energy programme - Energy storage system (ESS) test-bed" under the Energy and the Environment Division. This is an ongoing project which will be completed by December 2020.


  • A Ph.D. or Master’s Degree in an Engineering discipline relevant to ESS.
  • Knowledge on engineering economy or techno-economic analysis, and electricity market is highly advantageous.
  • Experience with systems modelling analysis and data analytics.
  • Industry or research experience in ESS is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work independently under minimum supervision.
  • A strong command of the English language preferred.

Job scope:

1.  Literature survey on state-of-the-art in ESS technologies with focus on battery storage technologies in terms of cost, performance, and other techno-economic indicators
2.  Review of the current state of developments in the electricity market in Singapore to identify a broad array of Singapore’s market conditions, drivers, and trends, and current rules and regulations set forth by the Energy Market Authority of Singapore
3.  Evaluate the life cycle cost and technical performance of grid-connected ESS solutions under the operating environment in Singapore
4.  Evaluate the market potentials of ESS, business models, and gaps in policy and regulations
